Final Selection Results of 2010

The final selection event for the “2010 New Designer Fashion Grand Prix” was held at Tokyo Midtown (Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan) on October 15, 2010 (Fri.).
A total of 27 original creations made from design drawings selected by judges in the primary stage of the competition were judged in fashion show-style. Models paraded the creations in front of eight judges, who then awarded points for the creations that most appealed to them.
The Grand Prix was awarded to one creation; two creations were awarded the Prize for Excellence, one for each the Women’s Wear and Men’s Wear categories; five creations were awarded the Workmanship Prize; and 19 creations were awarded Honorable Mention.

Women’s Wear Category

Yuya Miura
Occupation: Student (Sugino Fashion College)
Applied from: Japan
Theme: Georges de La Tour’s Candle Light and his Era
The creation was inspired by the candle light in La Tour’s drawings. Layers of soft tulle fabric are used to express the contrast between light and dark.

  • Prize for Excellence

    Women’s Wear Category

    Yuya Onishi
    Yukihiro Togo

    Occupation: Freelance
    Applied from: Japan
    Theme: Denguri
    The original idea of the design came from traditional Japanese “denguri” paper. The cloth consists of many layers sewn together. When the cloth is spread out, a lattice pattern can be seen on the surface of the cloth, creating a three-dimensional silhouette.

    Han Chul Lee

    Theme: Native American Classic.
    Futuristic-form padded clothing is used. Expression of the sense of lightheartedness and graphical elements in American culture is combined with Native American design.

    Women’s Wear Category

    Takuya Isagawa

    Occupation: Student (Esmod JaponOsaka)
    Applied from: Japan
    Theme: Rene Magritte.
    The design was inspired by the thoughts and works of Rene Magritte, a representative Surrealist painter. The tailored collar, buttons and zipper have an uneven feel, and a unique “surreal world” is expressed.

    Applied from: Japan
    Theme: Evolution.
    Patterns with various creatures as the motif are printed on a snake skin and bead embroidery is used. The design expresses a strong and perfectly beautiful form of a highly evolved organism.

    Theme: Boundary Surface.
    The boundary is constructed with surfaces instead of lines. The structural form is expressed using three-dimensional textile. The color changes on the right and left sides, and there is gradation on the front.

    Theme: Divinity ˜will steal your breath away˜.
    When people look at nature, art or clothes that are beautiful, they draw breath in amazement. People’s minds go completely blank and are washed totally white.

    Theme: Mutant.
    The creation has a modern image incorporating the distinctive shape and texture of traditional Korean tiled roof “kiwa.” The aim of this creation is to convey a strong sense of being aware of the difference between old and new.
